Free money rumor packs Collier claims facility
NAPLES: Business owners in a Collier County shopping plaza say it has become crowded mess after rumors of free money from BP have attracted large crowds.
People visiting the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, however, don’t believe it’s a rumor.
“Some got $7,500. Some got $12,000,” said Nelly Accineau, who filled out a claims application Monday after some of her friends told her they got thousands of dollars from the facility.
The big payout motivated Daphne Dorlus to get in line at 4 a.m.
She says her friend at church told her to come early to apply.
When asked whether she had been affected by the Gulf disaster, Dorlus, who works at Labcorp said, “I believe so. I don’t check with the company yet, but I try to.”
Amy Weiss, spokesperson for the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, says it is not giving away free money, and the people who are getting checks have experienced an economic loss from the Gulf oil spill.
“In order to get money from the Gulf Coast Claims Facility, you need to have back-up documentation that clearly proves economic loss,” she said.
To date, the facility has paid over $1.5 billion dollars to businesses and people affected by the spill – people like Susan Burns.
“I’m at the Marriott 16 years and this is the worst it’s been. I’ve never seen this. I worked four days, now I’m working two,” she said.
Weiss says the facility hopes this situation does not stop people who really need the money from coming in.
