GCCF awards nine oil-spill recovery grants

GULFPORT — Nine coast nonprofit agencies will receive a total of more than $116,350 in grants from the Gulf Coast Community Foundation’s Mississippi Oil Spill Recovery Fund. Checks will be presented to the group at 10 a.m. Monday at the Knight Nonprofit Center on Seaway Road in Gulfport.

Proceeds for GCCF’s Oil Spill Recovery Fund were raised through a Beau Rivage Resort and Casino benefit featuring “Tonight Show” host Jay Leno. Leno’s Aug. 21 show, “Stand Up for the Gulf Coast,” raised more than $90,000 from ticket sales and Jay Leno donated $10,000 of his own money to raise the total to $100,000.

An additional $13,000 came from MGM Resorts International employees through a special Cirque du Soleil event in Las Vegas and $3,250 from the O’Keefe Family Foundation.

The grant recipients:

n Hope Haven of Hancock County: $10,000

n Mental Health Association of Mississippi: $20,000

n Mississippi Center for Justice: $15,000

n St. Vincent de Paul Conference: $12,479

n St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy: $13,000

n Bethel Free Health Clinic: $15,000

n Gulf Coast Community Ministries: $5,000

n Gulf Coast Women’s Center for Nonviolence: $18,500

n Hancock County Food Pantry: $7,371

The fund not only provides emergency grants to nonprofit organizations helping the victims of the oil spill, but also helps address the long-term economic, environmental and cultural effects of the disaster and strengthen coastal communities against future environmental catastrophes by investing in solutions.

GCCF received 21 proposals totaling more than $450,000. The recovery fund grants committee — four GCCF board members and two representatives from the community — reviewed the proposals and identified this group of nine nonprofits that have the ability and the programs consistent with the wishes of Jay Leno to lessen the impact of human needs created by the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
