Florida Panhandle retailers want oil spill tax break

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — Florida Panhandle retailers want BP to pay an estimated $25 million for a series of sales tax “holidays” to mitigate against possible future losses from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill.

A coalition of businesses from the region and the Florida Retail Federation announced Tuesday that they have submitted the proposal to BP.

The company’s Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in April, spilling oil into the gulf for three months. Business people say the spill scared off tourists across the Panhandle although only a few beaches in the area received oil.

They believe lifting sales taxes one weekend per month for seven months – from February through August – next year would stimulate shopping.
